Started in the winter of 2007, the NYMVAE SingThing is an opportunity for singers to perform for each other in a casual setting.  Participants bring arias, art songs, oratorio; whatever repertoire they are working on and want to sing in front of people.  NYMVAE takes care of the organization, space, and securing accompanists.  The sessions are limited to 9 singers so that everyone has ample time to sing.

NYMVAE SingThing is a singer-focused program fostered by the company as part of its ongoing strategic plans. Created to fill an important part of a singer's development, it has become a useful tool for over 70 performers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is SingThing?

NYMVAE SingThing is a gathering of classically trained singers to perform for each other in a casual setting.  It is a way to prepare for performances and auditions, try out new repertoire, dust off old repertoire, polish a performance package, or experiment with new ways to present yourself.

 How do I sign up?

Sign up for NYMVAE SingThing or request to be added to the mailing list by e-mailing singthing@nymvae.org (if signing up, please include requested dates in your e-mail).

NYMVAE SingThing series are organized bi-monthly, and generally take place every week on Tuesday.  When a new series is opened, a sign up notice will be e-mailed to the NYMVAE SingThing mailing list and posted on the NYMVAE website, as well as at NYMVAE SingThing's Facebook page.

Once you recieve an e-mail confirming your requested dates, you are signed up and we ask that you honor our cancellation policy should the need arise.

How are participants selected?

Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the slots are full, additional requests are put on a waiting list.

What music can I bring?

NYMVAE SingThing participants are classically trained singers who generally bring opera and oratorio arias and art songs, as well as musical theater selections.  Sometimes there are even duets.

How much will I get to sing?

Space is limited to 9 singers so that everyone will have the opportunity to sing at least twice.  There is frequently time for a third round.

Can I use music?  Does it have to be memorized?

We strive for a casual workshop atmosphere, so you are welcome to bring in new repertoire and use music.  However you are still singing in public, in front of an audience of your peers.  A bit of 'performance polish' is called for, even in this relaxed setting.

Who plays for SingThing?

We are fortunate to have some of the best fingers around!  Coach/Accompanists who have played for SingThing include Anderson Brenner, Kelly Horsted, Richard Gordon, Roger Cantrell and Mory Ortman.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you are signed up for a SingThing evening and need to cancel, let us know before Monday evening so we can give your spot to another singer.  No-Shows and cancellations sent after 10pm Monday will be charged for the session.  Checks may be mailed to NYMVAE at PO Box 3124, New York, NY 10163.

Can I arrive late?

If you need to arrive late on occasion, let us know and we will do our best to accomodate you.  Please don’t make it a habit; your presense as a supportive audience member and colleague is vital.

Is there feedback?

NYMVAE SingThing is not a masterclass or set up to provide feedback; it is simply an opportunity to perform.  However participants often record themselves.

Where does my fee go?

Fees collected by SingThing are used to pay for the program's accompanists and space rental.  Any remaining funds support NYMVAE's future performances and administrative costs.  NYMVAE is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization.
